2024 Captains Cup and a special day for a long standing member

Our new Captain, Billy Alexander seen presenting the Captains Cup to the winner Kevin Wyllie. Billy took over from Jackie Brown, only a few days before having been Jackie’s vice captain. Kevin, a previous Club Champion, won the cup with a 2 under par net score in very difficult conditions with gusting winds.

Then Billy had the pleasurable duty of announcing that Gordon Thomson had been made an Honorary Member of the club. Gordon has been a member of our club for 42 years, and has seen the current good times but the also some of our dark days when our club may have disbanded. Instrumental in decisions and actions that saved our club.

First Medal of a new season. The Mungo Park 1874 Gents Medal

The winner of the first major trophy of the season was Tony Dolan with a net score of 66. All the golfers had to battle very high winds with 50 mile an hour gusts. To celebrate the fact that Mungo Park actually won the Open on 10th April 1874, 150 years ago, a special scratch competition ran along side the Medal. The winner was Euan Glen with a gross score of 71, again incredible scoring due to the weather conditions.

Thomas ‘Tam’ Flockhart

Today, 5th April 2024 was the funeral of one of the original members of the Club when it formed back in 1982. Tam was an Honorary Member of the club for this work and all his efforts to get recognition for the club. It was a grey day today due to the weather but also for the club to lose Tam. He kindly donated a trophy a few years ago that is played for and this will protect his memory within the club for years to come. RIP

The Final event was on Wednesday 27th  March 2024

28th March 2024

On a day when many others were closed due to the weather, 2023 winner Ross Noon (Musselburgh Old) put up a great defence of his title as he finished third on 70, one better than Bathgate’s Graham Bell with Davie Thomson (Pumpherston) next on 73. Noon’s effort secured victory for him in the season-long Scratch Order of Merit, finishing ahead of Newbattle’s Craig Surgeon then Bell and Thomson.

Everyone at the club congratulate this incredible feat in defending this title and representing our great club. Well done Ross.

Winter Singles and Pairs Finals

On the weekend Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March the finals of the Winter handicap competitions were played. Usually both are played on the same day, however Matthew Craigy was in both finals so they were played on different days. In the Singles final Matthew played Mike McVean, and it was a close encounter with Matthew winning one up. Not only did the two battle each other they had to battle the strong winds that were gusting to 30 and 40 miles per hour.

On Sunday in the pairs competition Matthew was partnered by Kevin Wyllie and they played James Bonthron and Mark Allison. With Matthew and Kevin being former club Champions they had to give a number of shots to  James and Mark. In better weather another close encounter with Matthew and Kevin winning one up.

Congratulations to all involved in the two competitions especially the finalist and two time winner Matthew Craigy with his partner Kevin Wyllie.

East Lothian Winter League MOCGC Team

A great season for the winter league team finally came to an end on Sunday 17th March 2024 with a loss in a play off match versus Tantallon Golf Club. Having finished just short of automatic promotion by coming 2nd in Division 2 they had to play the club in the relegation place in the 1st Division. Remarkable that our small club with only a hundred or so members can compete in a scratch competition requiring 10 golfers (5 foursomes pairings). It became apparent that the task was going to be difficult when the total of the 10 Tantallon golfer’s handicaps were revealed to be plus 22.

Every member that played in the season should be congratulated for their performances throughout the winter, including the Captain Scott McFarlane. Difficult decisions regarding team selection had to be made as we had a large group of members wishing to be picked in the team. The future of the club and the winter league team is looking very good. Once again congratulations are the order of the day for the whole squad and the team are already looking forward to next year.
