The Secretaries Trophy is to celebrate all of our Honorary Secretaries past and present. Therefore it was fitting that one of our past Secs, Alan Tweedie seen here being presented by the Captain, won the competition. It was a rainy day so his scoring was even more impressive, as he carded a gross 69, net 65.

One of the few competitions that take place on a Saturday is our Invitational Texas Scramble, where each four man team must have at least two guests. One of the members of the winning team Kevin Wyllie seen above with the trophy, with a remarkable net score of 50.2. The others in his team were Gavin Taylor and guests Conor McGowan and Dean Glass, In an outstanding competition, they only pipped a team lead by Kieran Gracey, Liam Smith and guests Gareth Wallace and Jack Stewart who had a net score of 50.8. With third place having a net score of 51.0 was Brian Skilling, Brian Weddell, with guests Josh Williams and Andy Williamson. The team led by Ryan Henderson, Euan Glen with guests Jack Valentine and Jamie Chapman had a remarkable gross score of of 53, which is 15 under par. In fact all 14 teams that took part had a net score in the 50s

One of our competitions that are on the boards is our Charity Day. A great day within the club, but the big winners are the charity chosen. For the last few years we have chosen a local charity rather than a nationwide one, and this year it is The John Bellany Day Centre. They run The Musselburgh Meeting Centre, which run get togethers for people suffering from dementia. We host one of these every Thursday within the club and the money will allow them have days out etc.

A tremendous effort by our members one more time, allowing us to present them with a cheque for £2,000. The wee club with a big heart, and the Committee thank all involved.

The major competitions at the club keep coming during the summer, and one of our open competitions is the Lewisville. One of our guests Robert Binnie from Duddingston GC won the handicap prize. Our members then brought up the other places – Matthew Craigie, Kieran Gracey, Richard Leslie and Blair Murray. The scratch prize went to a guest Brian Fairgrieve, father of member Stephen, with Calum Livingstone and Declan Henderson coming second and third.

On the Sunday of The Open the club runs two competitions in one. A medal round to claim the Claret Jug and before you tee off you draw a golfer in the last round of The Open. The net score plus the pros score combined to lift the Pro Am trophy.

An incredible score by Jackie Brown a gross 77 less 21 giving a net score of 56, winning by a massive 8 shots. The club Captain Gordon Henderson seen with Jackie and “our” Claret Jug. With Musselburgh’s connection to the original trophy this is one of our major competitions and we had a full entry sheet.

As we can not present the Pro Am until the actual Open finishes it was a full club waiting to see who would win. Eddie Whoriskey shot an 80 less 16 for a net score of 64, and luckily he had drawn Thomas Detry as his pro, who shot a 69.

On Saturday 4th July we hosted the 25th Musselburgh Challenge, an invitational team event played with hickory clubs. Teams from Muirfield, The R&A, Bruntsfield Links, Musselburgh GC, Kilspindie, Port Seton, The Thorntree GC, Dunbar, British Golf Collectors, Leith Links and two teams from MOCGC, arrived on a windy day to compete. The first match saw one of our pairings play with a pair from the current holders The Thorntree. At the halfway stage one of our pairings Euan Glen and Kevin Wyllie led the way with an impressive 36 for 9 holes, with The Thorntree holding second spot. Our last pairing of Kieran Blyth and Alan Tweedie playing the absolute match of the day. At this point The Thorntree pairs had accumulated a total of 77 and were leading the pack. However our pair returned another 36 to win the trophy for the first time in 20 years by a margin of 5 shots. Our team shown above with the trophy.

On Sunday 28th June the Club hosted our Club Championship. Our new Club Champion is Matthew Craigie, the “B” Champion is Ross Larner, The “C” Champion is Eddie Whoriskey and the Senior Champion is Alan Tweedie.

The first competition of the season that members invite a guest from another club is our Invitational Silloth. For those that do not know the calculation of the handicap for the better ball pairs competition, is somewhat complicated. With a magnificent turnout of 44 members and 44 guests, made for a great days competition. The day was kindly sponsored by Matthew Craigie and he is seen presenting the trophy to the winning pair, Kevin Cunningham and his partner. Kevin is a new member this year, and gave a nice speech. Second was James Surgeon by a few decimal places, and he had to wait until the last few tee times came in as Kevin was second last out. Another new member Steven Wilson and his partner had the lowest scratch score. Not only was it a crowded course but also a crowded bar / lounge after as we entertained our guests.

One of the first major competitions of the season is the Captain’s Cup. Gordon Henderson our new Captain is seem presenting Liam Smith, who had a net 62.
